Castlemaine Gaolcomprises a complex of bluestone buildings constructed to the designs of the Public Works Department of Victoria, the first wing in 1857 with additions between 1858-64. The incomplete design features single storied warden's quarters about a gabled, central entrance. Cell blocks and a hospital radiate from a central hall and there is a wall with turrets.
